It's official: violent games are banned in Venezuela

On Wednesday the law took effect banning video games like violent war toys and violate the norm could be cause for severe punishment.

The penalties go up to five years in prison. The law states that who by any means To promote the purchase or use of these Games will be punished with heavy ends, while those who import, manufacture, sell, rent or distribute shall be punished with imprisonment from three to five years.

According to El Nacional, Rep. Wilmer Iglesias said "do not claim that a law like this will solve definitively the problem of violence in the country, but we stress that will be an important element in the peaceful education of our children and adolescents, future citizens.

On 18 January, President Hugo Chávez lashed out Barbie and the PlayStation. He said the Barbie doll represents a danger to the girls' minds and have nothing to do with Venezuelan culture, so it has been suggested that Indian manufactured dolls in place of this.
